Distance Learning Degrees – What Do Employers Think Of Them?

January 7th, 2010 by Mary Jack

With the technological expansion of the Internet, distance learning degrees have become increasingly popular. With great support facilities and the convenience of online degree programs, parents and workers can still have a family and a job while receiving an education. Unfortunately, the Internet has also provided an avenue for individuals making money by selling bogus degrees over the Internet. In a 2003 report by USA Today, 400 diploma mills are already in operation, with the shameful industry already worth $500 million per year, and the numbers are still rising.

However, despite all the unpleasant information going around about distance learning degrees, the fact is there are plenty of legitimate universities and colleges offering online degree programs. These colleges are legitimate and not involved in any way in offering dubious and fake diplomas. Instead, these colleges are going the extra mile to provide quality education online by taking advantage of all available instructional resources such as quality instructional design coupled with video lectures, online digital libraries and proctored exams to ensure their students get quality education and a valid, qualified diploma. Unfortunately, numerous employers have not yet been sold into this alternative way of acquiring education, thus they still regard such degrees as invalid or dubious.

To avert the confusion, 6 accrediting agencies were set up by the National Education Board of the U.S government with the role of providing accreditation to colleges and universities who meet a set educational standard. This ultimately differentiates the legitimate colleges from the fake ones. Students enrolling in these accredited colleges can rest assured they are receiving quality and qualified education. Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) is an additional accrediting body which solely exists for the purpose of providing accreditation to colleges that offer distance learning degrees. DETC is a legit body that falls under the umbrella of the US Department of Education and CHEA.

For the students looking for specific programs of specialization, various associations are available to assess the excellence of these distance learning degrees and grant the necessary accreditation to qualifying schools. For example, accounting programs are scrutinized and accredited by the International Association for Management Education, and health programs answer to the evaluations of the American Health Management Association. Only the agencies recognized by CHEA or the Department of Education have the authority to grant institutional accreditation.

Why should a student be concerned about an educational institutions accreditation? Basically, it is to ensure everyone is receiving the same quality education, whether they are attending classes on campus or seeking distance learning degrees. Before granting accreditation for online degree programs, an agency assesses whether the basic requirements for support, education, and learning facilities are in place. In addition, specialized programs must submit curriculum to be evaluated, based upon the pre-determined standards of the specialty, regardless of the college or university.

Accreditation assures employers, parents and students that a respective college awarding degrees has undergone and passed a stringent test of excellence in offering quality education in the respective areas of training. On the other hand, diploma mills and fake colleges don’t meet the same standards of education imposed by the agencies since they don’t possess any legitimate accreditation. Thus courses taken by prospective employees that are accredited by the respective agencies would have met standards imposed on the respective specialized areas.

In the end, it is totally up to potential employers to decide whether to hire an individual with a distance learning degree. With skepticism influenced by all the bogus diploma mills, no wonder they are being more cautious. Therefore, if the accreditation is supplied by a trusted and recognized source, the application for a job is less likely to be set aside. Instead, it has a better chance to be found in the stack for a second interview or final selection for a job position.

How Can You Spot A Fake Online Bachelor Degree?

January 7th, 2010 by Mary Jackson

With the rise in demand for online bachelor degrees, many bogus learning institutions have mushroomed over the internet with the sole intention of taking advantage of innocent students seeking for a genuine degree. These so-called “Colleges” often attract applicants with their attractive degree programs which are boasts of easy graduation, low tuition fees, no examinations and credit given for life experience, all of which just sound too good to be true. Some of them even go to the extent of prospecting for customers by sending out bulk email citing university degrees for sale.

So, how do prospective students determine whether an online college is accredited or only offering bogus online Bachelor degrees? Especially for International students, it can be very difficult to determine a school’s validity. In most cases it is impossible for distance learners to visit the campus, so the website is the only point of contact before making the choice and enrolling, which makes it hard to determine credibility.

One of the qualifying factors that can be utilized by students to make correct enrolment decisions is by determining the type of college accreditation that has been received by their college of consideration. If the college vaguely states itself as having “nationwide or worldwide accreditation” without stating specifically which regional accreditation body it is accredited with, then most likely this college does not possess legitimate accreditation.

In the U.S., college accreditation is awarded by one of the following six accreditation agencies which are all appointed by the National Board of Education – New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA), Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA), Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS), Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NWCCU). Each agency has been allocated responsibility for providing accreditation for schools in specific states. Therefore, it would be best to run checks on a particular online degree institution with the agency offering college accreditation for the state in which the college is registered in.

Another tell-tale sign of bogus online bachelor degrees offered is when the university advertises itself through mass-mailing email featuring university degrees for sale. Many bogus distance learning institutions prey on people who are desperate for a degree, but don’t have the time and money to go for proper education. That is why these colleges boast of degrees without any examinations, classes, studying or even waiting. There are even websites that offer online bachelor degrees for just a few hundred dollars which can be ordered and received within 7 days. Furthermore, some of them also have dubious accrediting links, stating accreditation from agencies which are not any one of the six listed above. Additionally, they offer fixed prices for their Master’s, Bachelor’s, and even Doctorate Degrees. Their justification for awarding degrees will be for giving credit to life experiences such as any type of work experience, any educational background, any workshops or community services attended as well as travel experience, hobbies and even on the number of books that a person has read!

In conclusion, as the awareness on bogus degrees increases amongst prospective employers, degrees obtained through a legitimate avenue of education can sometimes be mistaken for bogus online bachelor degrees too. Therefore, the best approach to select a college would ideally be based on legitimate college accreditation awarded by the appointed authorities to the respective colleges.

Study the Mechanics of Speed Reading

January 6th, 2010 by Dr. Jay Polmar

The mind is a source of immeasurable power, and we only use a tiny portion of it. In the book, “Speed Reading in only One Hour” I show you how to tap some of that unused power and how to use it for your own improved grades in high school, college, and great successes life.

Your brain and mind are capable of understanding from 10,000 to 50,000 units of information every minute; one unit being equal to one word. This information is based upon somewhat old statistics (1980’s). Based on new speed reading technology, as well as strides in brain and mind development, you can probably achieve phenomenal reading speeds yourself and easily.

The average high school graduate, when tested, reads about 250 words per minute. The college student reads at about 300 words per minute. But, no matter what your beginning reading speed, don’t worry, it is only the starting line. Imagine what an advantage you will have to be able to read over 100% faster than you had before; the possibilities are limitless.

We receive information through our five physical senses, (touching, tasting, hearing, smelling, and seeing) and by those we make decisions. We make choices and judgments from the factors that our physical senses bring into play. The five physical senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch) are preprogrammed for automatic reaction.

We learn in many way, not only from physical senses, but through other forms of thought. Most thinking is conscious in nature. Senses, on the other hand, work automatically. An example of an automatic response might be: when a hungry teenager smells pizza, he or she begins salivating. Or was that Pavlov’s dog? Actually, it’s the same! What’s taking place is that the sense of smell (called olfactory senses) has automatically brought up a thought, “PIZZA”, to the brain and mind. The thought may be unconscious.

Sensing food is a physical sensation through smell. It is a mental sensation (unconsciously or consciously) through thought. And lastly there is a physical sensation through eating, swallowing, and smiling. To summarize the PIZZA adventure: Brain and mind is where the “action” is taking place. Body is where the “reaction” is taking place.

The brain and the mind hold enormous untapped potential; We’re going to help you tap into that potential through Speed Reading in One Hour, available at speedread.org, and we’ll show you how you can succeed in your college life and beyond.

The Secret to Online Psychology Master Degrees High Flying

November 3rd, 2009 by Larry Thompson

Are you considering going for your psychology master’s degree online? In the US, masters degrees consist of the Master of Arts or M.A.; The Master of Science Degree or M.S. and the Master of Business Administration or M.B.A and other masters degree programs such as the Master of Social Work, M.S.W. or a Master Degree in Psychology, M.S.

As you analyze all the many degree options at your disposal – from business to health care services to technology to social work or psychology (often called psych), it’s critical that you are sure to select a distance learning degree program with an outstanding review or reputation.

As you look at 21st century education through the internet, a couple of things must stand out. Why is there a growing number of people looking to take advantage of the convenience, cost savings and overall enriching experience of distance learning? Well, that sentence says it all really…

As you assess the many online psychology masters degrees online you’ll be clear about a few things. First, there’s certainly alot of schools that are just as quality as traditional schools. Second, there are many degree options to choose from. That said, one thing you’d do wise to keep in the back of your mind is whether or not a school is accredited or not.

Online education providers that promise you a degree that can be gained in a few days or weeks vs. the traditional way are more likely to be frauds. They will bombard you with empty promises and give you a worthless piece of paper that they will call a “diploma” in exchange for you hard earned money.

Accreditation of any college and university that offer online or in campus degrees aims to assure prospective students of quality education and a genuine degree. This is to separate and identify the authentic online degree providers from the fake ones. If you sign up with online degree providers such as these, your time, money and effort will all go to waste as you will get a certification that means nothing.

The credentials you’ll earn from a non legit school are probably worth less than the paper (or email form) your so called degree is printed on. So beware. There could even be problems for you when you apply for a job and an application asks if your school is accredited or not. To keep schools true to the right standards, formal assessment (accredited or not accredited ratings) are put in place to make sure your investment is protected and your interests are well served.

As accrediting bodies constantly evaluate the kind of education the colleges and universities give. When you want a top quality education for your master’s degree you have to be committed to the best. Make sure you only get your online psychology master degree from a well established institution. It pays to do your research – literally!

Make a Change. Get psychology degree online and online psychology master degree career info now.

The Road to Becoming an Accountant

September 26th, 2009 by Maria Bascuas

by Maria Bascuas

The path to becoming an accountant is long, but well worth the effort. You’ll need a 4- year college degree in accounting to enter the field as an accountant, rather than as a bookkeeper who can begin with a two year AA. To go farther and be licensed as a CPA in most states and territories you can apply to sit for the exam after you achieve your bachelor’s. Most people, however, will need further graduate level coursework aimed specifically at preparation for licensed work. You’ll also need to pass the universal CPA exam, and obtain the work experience necessary. By meeting the specific requirements of your state and by following through over the years with mandatory relicensing and continuing education, you can gain a career that is stable, respectable, well paid and secure. There are few professions as clearly and constantly useful as that of the CPA.

If all you are planning for is a simple position as an accountant, then a four year degree in accounting will suffice. Be sure to choose a reliable provider. Check to be certain that the school is accredited, and compare its programs with the best in the nation. You want to complete the training with a solid background in common business bookkeeping and accounting practices, and in auditing and forensic accounting. A sound overview of tax law is mandatory, as is training in the use of an array of common, industry standard software programs such as Peachtree and Quicken.

Graduate programs for those planning on taking the CPA exam can also be gained through many sources. Don’t limit yourself to any single answer before doing your research. The demands placed on CPAs are extensive and include many elements of professional skill not often called on by simple accounting positions. A CPA is a specialist, and you want to make certain you are getting the academic training needed to turn you into a specialist. Online sources of programs can be very good: however look into programs in as many places and using as many venues as possible. The “perfect” program for you could be at a University Extension, or through a local business college.

The best place to learn about the universal CPA exam is at the exam website, http://www.cpa-exam.org/. The site provides an overview of the test and its sections, as well as information about qualifying to sit for the exam, frequency of testing permitted, and more. Because of the central importance of passing the test you should take the time to completely familiarize yourself with this site before even signing up for a grad course. By learning the structure, nature, topics and goals of the exam you can better assess the value of programs offered.

Your final step to gaining certification is to fulfill the obligation to gain work experience. The requirements vary from state to state, but can be checked either through your state licensing board or through online sites such as http://www.becker.com/accounting/cpaexamreview/state/index.cfm. When you have completed this final requirement you can become a certified public accountant.

To retain your license you will be required to renew on a schedule determined by your regional authorities, and will also have to present proof of continuing accounting education. Without both of these ongoing obligations your license will lapse. Therefore when you have accomplished your goal and gained your license be sure to meet the obligations that license imposes to avoid professional complications.

How You Benefit From Online Tutoring

September 25th, 2009 by Luke Redding

by Luke Redding

Online tutoring is fast being reinforced as a method of learning in our world that is here to stay. More and more people are opting for this method for a number of different advantages that online tutoring presents. Others are using it for just part of their learning while for others it is their entire course being done on the web. Some may say that it is even totally better than any other form of tutoring.

One of the biggest advantages of the online tutoring is that it can reach any number of people worldwide. Somebody that is in a third world country can receive the best education the world has to offer straight from his country. Many barriers have been stripped down by making this possible. The right and proper education is now reaching areas where for many reasons it could not before.

Online tutoring gets another plus from me because of the convenience it gives you. One can learn their math courses online without getting from under their bed covers every morning to get to class. All they need is their laptop, a pen and a pad. You are educated right in your own comfort zone. This I assume will let you learn more than somebody who is uncomfortable in a stuffy lecture hall of three thousand.

For those passionate about teaching the masses then online tutoring is a Godsend to them. All they have to do is switch on their webcam and carry on with their classes. Their webcasts have an audience of thousands instead of just a classroom’s handful. To make matters better they can be recorded and therefore never really have to disappear off the web. They can always be watched again and again from every 101 session.

An advantage that goes to the person getting the online tutoring is also in the costs that are avoided attending a physical classroom. You do not have to budget for that transport to class every day. You also do not need to buy paper printed books which cost much more than electronic media. An online tutor will not charge you what a school will charge you for the same information that he will give you.

When one is getting online tutoring most of the time it is received in forms that are keep able. For example you may have the lecture in an mp3 format that you are sent for to listen to. The mp3 audio tape will have the advantage that you can listen to it over and over again. This will give you ample time to understand concepts unlike professors who will not care too much about repeating their lectures to you.

With some online tutoring but not all however, you cannot interact with the teacher. One very important thing in the learning process is that two way interaction. When you cannot ask the tutor to expound on something that they just said this puts you at a learning disadvantage. The online tutors are best if they can be asked for their feedback on things during the learning process.

There are many people who are taking advantage of the world of tutoring by offering their skills and knowledge to other for a fee. Online tutoring has therefore also created employment for those who are not hired by other learning school facilities.
