How Resume Writing Impacts Your Job Search
October 24th, 2009 by Eric Civi
Resume writing (specifically poor resume writing) is the 2nd most common reason that people are not hired for positions in spite of their expertise. The only reason that it comes in 2nd is because the #1 reason people do not get jobs is because they do not apply. Whether they doubt themselves or do not have the time, many people cut themselves from the running just by not applying to jobs.
Once you have gotten past uncertainty and are starting with resume writing, there are several things to remember. There are dozens of different formats of resumes, endless ways to write them, and millions of experts out there who will tell you that they have the secret to great resume writing. The big secret: there is not any. You just need to approach resume writing with an open mind and be willing to invest the time to conquer resume writing. Do this well and you will be on your way to getting a job in no time.
It does not matter what level you are at; not having a polished resume almost guarantees failure. There are so many resume books and websites that there is no reason you could not prepare a proper resume yourself. It is essential to remember that each resume should be unique. If 79 people apply for a job and every resume looks the same, the employer will not be impressed. However, if some candidates take the time to make their resume stand out from the crowd, they will probably be first in line for a job interview.
How do you make your resume stand out when you do not know what other candidates are doing? While you cannot know how other job seekers are writing their resume, you can however do everything in your power to make yours as flawless as possible. To begin with, avoid grammatical errors and adequate spacing. Then work on other elements that will make your resume writing a success. For example, look for keywords in the vacancy announcement and use them in your resume. That way, you will grab the attention of the hiring manager. Also, if you use bold fonts (wisely) to emphasize important elements of your resume, you will create a way to stand from other candidates.
It does not matter what format of resume you are preparing or what is your career level. All candidates must provide unique resumes in order to make the best first impression on employers.
