Personal Communication Is Critical to Deterring Rumors and Soothing Employee Concerns

November 30th, 2009 by Marty Dickinson

If you want to dispel the anxiety growing in your workplace, build a foundation of trust built on communication. When times are tough, the workplace rumor mill swings into action act quickly. Therefore, managers need to communicate openly and honestly with employees to stop rumors in their tracks. Here are five tips to help managers ease employee anxiety.

1. Be Accessible

As a senior leader, you need to be accessible and visible to your employees. When there is a problem, don’t wait until all the details of the solution have been fleshed out before informing your workers. Instead, inform them of your progress along the way as the decisions are being made. In uncertain times, it is more important than ever to be accessible. You’re not just there to share information with the workforce, but to build trust with them along the way, and dispel rumors as they spring up.

2. Don’t Hide From Bad News

Your employees know that times are challenging and that the company will need to evolve in order to be successful, so you have no reason to keep bad news from your workforce. It will become even harder to communicate with a distrustful workforce if you try to imply that all is well when it obviously is not. Keeping your employees in the loop and informing them as soon as you know changes are necessary is the best antidote for workplace gossip. When a workforce has faith in their management, they will trust they will heard bad news from the source and stop spreading rumors amongst themselves.

3. Stress Face to Face Communication

All too often, leaders communicate bad news via e-mails and memos. All leaders are busy, but your first priority must be the productivity of your workforce. Research has shown that face-to-face or voice-to-voice conversations build up trust in a relationship and also improve the clarity of your message. You may find yourself stumped by a question that you didn’t expect, but don’t worry. Your people don’t expect you to be perfect, but they will appreciate the time you took to talk to them.

4. Hear Your Employees

The two-way conversation in face-to-face communication is a huge advantage. Many employees will be able to give you solid suggestions to resolve the challenges the company faces, but this is not the only advantage to listening to your workforce. The mere knowledge that senior management values their ideas and reactions to the situation enough to listen and speak with them can propel your employees to re-commit to the company and to you as a manager.

5. Admit You Don’t Have All the Answers Yet

It is important to be honest when talking to your employees, both about what you know and about what is still unknown. Because people understand that no-one can know everything, it will build conviction and understanding if you can detail what is still unclear. If you are unsure about the future, it is better to discuss the prospects for the company and probabilities for success rather than making promises that might not be kept.

Communication is the foundation of a good management team, and the only way you will get your employee’s best performance. Above all else, make it a priority to communicate truthfully, candidly, and without hesitation.

MBA Applicants Spend 12-16 Weeks Studying for GMAT?

November 29th, 2009 by Zeke Lee

If you’re getting ready for the GMAT exam, you might know by now that most people study for the GMAT in 12-16 weeks. Some get ready for up to a year or even more.

Why so long?

Exorbitant $1500 prep programs center around 12-16 week courses that eat up your Saturday afternoons. 12-16 weeks!

Even an intense-college course on sub-atomic physics takes only 9 weeks (in a quarter system like at Stanford) or slightly longer for semester system colleges.

I’ve never taken a sub-atomic physics class before, but trust me-there’s a TON more rigorous material in a 9 week sub-atomic physics class than there could possibly be on the GMAT.

Most of the concepts on the GMAT were discussed in high school. You’ve seen all this material before! So all you really need to do is to review high school math and writing and maybe learn a few new concepts. You’d also need to familiarize yourself with the various ways the GMAT guys try to trick you on the exam.

So given that most test takers prepare 12-16 weeks for this exam that covers high school level material, why then is the average GMAT score in the low 500s? Seems like a perfectly legitimate question!

At first, I thought the only two reasons were 1) the content 2) the exam is very tricky

But it wasn’t until my two friends came out of the exam that I realized there’s actually a THIRD reason. You see, my two friends came out of the exam disappointed with their scores.

I asked them: How did you study?

They handed me a stack of the GMAT prep books they used to study. Within minutes I was absolutely confused!

The prep book was chock full of grammatical terms like participial phrase, dependent clause, and subjunctive. I can’t imagine studying those fancy terms!

No wonder why MBA applicants takes 12-16 weeks to prep for the GMAT! They allocate their time learning these useless fancy grammar terms. The critical reasoning section was also filled with these weird terms I did not understand.

It wasn’t long before my eyes started wandering into la la land as I lost focus and concentration.

The quant section did an equally stellar job of putting me to sleep. As a visual learner, there’s only so much I can absorb by reading a book.

It was a lightbulb moment: my relatively smart friends did poorly on the exam because the inefficient prep resources they used forced them to learn unnecessary grammar terms and confused them further. The prep books taught concepts–which are important–but they were missing something important: an efficient thought process. My friends essentially learned all the concepts, but they did not know how to think through the exam question in a time-pressured environment.

During my two weeks of intense, marathon-like studying, I didn’t waste my time on “concepts” and instead developed an efficient thought process with frameworks that help me identify what is being tested.

But I can see how I could easily have ended up studying away 12-16 weeks of my life had I studied the way my friends did for the GMAT. I eventually showed my friends my thought process and they retook the exam with success. You can read more about our story.

So back to the original question: Why do most students study GMAT for 3-6 months?

1) the material is very rigorous 2) the test is very tricky 3) confusing, inefficient studying techniques

The material is difficult, but it’s not impossible. Yes, the exam is very tricky so understanding the ways the GMAT guys try to trick you is crucial.

And yes, learn from the mistakes of my two friends. Make sure you stay away from confusing prep books that can waste away your precious time. Be smart about how you study because remember–how you study is perhaps the most important aspect to getting a good score.

Zeke Lee is the founder of the GMAT Pill Study Method, a unique GMAT Prep study method that has aided many students do well on the GMAT in as little time as possible. Learn the strategies he used to score in the 98th percentile of the exam in just 2 weeks of rigorous preparation with GMAT Questions.

How a Violinist Plays Ponticello

November 28th, 2009 by Clayton Haslop

A couple days ago I received a query asking how to play ponticello easily and to great effect. Now in case you don’t already know, ponticello is a kind of special effect. And it is produced when the bow tracks so close to the bridge that the string is forced to produce higher frequencies than are part of the normal overtone series. The result is a kind of eerie, slightly scratchy color to the sound.

Now, there are two issues that make the execution of this effect a little more challenging than drawing a straight tone.

First, it is critical that the bow track right next to the bridge without fail. You’ll notice that when you draw a normal tone the bow can move back and forth between bridge and fingerboard to somewhat without negatively impacting the sound – one does like to avoid this, however. As soon as the bow wanders from the bridge in ponticello, the effect disappears immediately.

The second issue is control. Because the bow is not fully ‘in the string,’ as we say, there is a greater tendency for hidden tensions in the bow arm to manifest in just the sort of wanderings mentioned above.

Sometimes, in the case of the bow suddenly passing OVER the bridge (and this happens to everyone at one time or another), this ‘wandering’ becomes more akin to an alarming betrayal.

So, how to practice this technique so it is secure and well behaved.

First thing I would do is slow, quiet, long bows ponticello – that is, with the bow right next to the bridge – to get in touch with the bow stroke, from tip to frog. Once you’ve gotten a sense of the bow placement and the relaxed unfolding of the bow arm, you can begin playing some scales and arpeggios using the entire length of the bow; very smooth, no spaces between the notes. At first you may want to play single notes per bow. As the ease of maintaining bow control increases, however, I suggest you slur notes together, reaching eight or twelve to a stroke.

Gradually you will also increase the weight on the string – relaxed arm weight.

Now, ponticello is also often called for in combination with tremolo, a fast, repeated, and unmeasured stroking of one note. And to practice this variant I recommend arriving at tremolo by starting at a slow rate of speed using just the forearm. From there gradually increase the speed and narrow the travel of the bow. As you stroke more rapidly begin to add arm weight, if, that is, you need to perform the effect in forte.

The secret to this is the purity of your detach, really. Understand that I do not use my wrist – unless I’m feeling quite lazy – to produce my tremolo; simply the forearm. The elbow joint must be absolutely free of restriction.

The bottom line is, Ponticello really forces you to separate the vertical weight of the arm from the relaxed horizontal movements of the arm. It requires absolute freedom in the joints of the right arm. And these together make it an excellent tool for sharpening the efficiency and purity of your bow arm.

The Basics To Earning Income In Currency Trades When The Industry Is Fluctuating

November 28th, 2009 by Mckee Silva

It is very common to see the stock market fluctuating these days. It is very common to see stocks rapidly go up one minute and take a big fall in just a couple of days. The fourth quarter is notorious for these fluctuations when Wall Street is in a buying frenzy to buy and sell of stocks.

When Wall Street is actively engaged in stock trading and somehow makes enormous profits, beginners often hear about it and run to invest in the same stock. All too often, they end up losing their money because they entered the trade during the wrong time of the trade based on lack of experience.

New stock traders lack the experience to compete in winning trades. It takes time to develop a wining strategy and to often newcomers are investing when the market is headed in the wrong direction. You should never invest money based on media hype.

If you want to make a lot of money in stocks, you have to learn when to enter a trade and when to pull out of a trade. As simple as this may sound, it really is far more complicated than you may think. Success in stock trading requires the ability to trade using a variety of tested systems and strategies.

So how do you find a winning stock trading strategy? It does not come from making unwise investment decisions. You will never hear about them from reading a cue card. Winning strategies for the stock market comes by learning and gaining experience. Often it requires a lot of testing and tweaking of existing proven market strategies to formulate you own strategy.

If you are not experienced with stock trading bots and software programs designed to analyze key market indicators, then you can end up becoming very confused when the market starts to change. More than likely, your reaction time to the market will not be fast enough to make a profitable decision because stock market profits demands swift decisions on a dime.

The best investment strategy if you are new to the stock market is to start out very slow with a minimal investment. If you can access a demo account to practice on then that is highly recommended because you will not lose any real money. Learn how to correctly interpret market strengths and weaknesses and how they relate to market signals before you throw all of your eggs into the stock market.

The good news is that there are many websites that publish proven and effective investment strategies and techniques. They can show what to look for in upcoming winning trades and how to take advantage of the trade to make the most money. Search the internet and you will be amazed at the resources which are available to you.

Risk Management In Managed Care Healthcare Centers

November 27th, 2009 by Roberta Broyles

Managed care healthcare programs were started by the government to provide the people of the land with the necessary healthcare facilities that they need. These programs provide healthcare services to people at a much lesser cost as compared to normal besides helping improve the general quality of care itself too. This has been made possible through many different managed healthcare programs such as the Independent Practice Organization, the health Maintenance Organization, the Preferred Provider Organization and the Point of service to Managed Care organization in Indemnity insurance.

The usual plan in managed care healthcare was that a person could get enrolled into any of the managed care programs at a small fee. Once enrolled, he or she could consult any person amongst the premium doctors on panel in each such program. In return for such treatments provided by the doctors, the government gave them access to their funds.

These doctors provide their services to the program for a small fee and for benefits that they get from the government. This creates a win-win situation for both the patients and the doctors.

There are different variants of the managed healthcare program and all these variants are based on the same principle with slight differences.

The managed care program is a very good program for everyone involved but it does has a few pitfalls. The program can work only when a large number of people agree to joining it.

Under the circumstances, most small organizations will not be able to survive. On the other hand if you have an organization that is really large with a huge number of people enrolled into the program then it will be able to manage the finances better in the circumstances.

Under such circumstances a proper risk management strategy is required to ensure that the program works and the risks inherent to it are all managed well. In order to let this happen, financial risk management strategies need to be applied to the managed care healthcare program after it is implemented.

The impact of the managed care healthcare program on the patients’ lives is still a point of debate. Its proponents believe that it has increased the efficiency of treatment whereas those against argue that it has in fact increased the cost of care by nearly 25-30% for patients.

Rights Assured – Domestic Help Wanted

November 27th, 2009 by Alice Sy

Being a domestic helper is promising and fulfilling if you have found a job but the path to success doesn’t end there. You are not working for nothing, for what you give you deserve what is rightfully yours so as you do your work make sure you are getting something back. There’s a demand for domestic helpers so domestic help wanted worldwide is not unusual and so are your rights.

For Domestic helpers who feel less than most employers, for those who are just to experience their first work abroad or for those who are simply no aware of the law, it’s about time to memorize these rights that can only be helpful to anybody.

Part of living in a house to work is to have a good living space also. Once a domestic helper is hired to live and work for a family, he or she automatically becomes part of the household with respective rights therein. This includes having a good place to sleep in good sanitary condition, complete with amenities and accessories. They are not necessary expensive but decent enough and not should go below the usual room of the helper in her original residence. Also, the room automatically becomes private once the helper has settled in, it becomes her personal space of comfort and solace amidst work where domestic help is wanted.

The labor codes in most countries suggest a fair working time not to exceed 10 hours a day. As part of the rule any work done beyond that must be properly compensated and considered as an over time. Aside from that, break time should be allotted properly as well as one day full day off.

A fair warning to all domestic helpers out there, it is only right to look for employers who have the power to sustain their needs. They have the right to choose where to work and who to work with. A domestic help wanted is not necessary unless there really was a great need. So don’t keep your rights to yourself, your purpose serves a valuable role in many lives and futures.
